BSA regulated degradation performance and osteogenesis of CaCO3 coating on magnesium alloy for orthopedic applications

Abstract

Rapid degradation of magnesium (Mg) alloys and slow osteogenesis surrounding implants greatly limit their clinical applications. In present study, influence of BSA on the characteristics of CaCO3 coating on MgZnCa alloy was investigated to adjust the degradation behaviors of Mg alloy and cell response to the coating. BSA can regulate the crystalline and the particle size of CaCO3 in the coating and deteriorate coating stability and thickness, thereby leading to a tunable corrosion resistance for CaCO3@BSA coatings. Moreover, the presence of BSA bestows more suitable composition, roughness and wettability on cells with a better osteogenic performance on the coating.
