Abstract
The agriculture and water sectors in Ethiopia and South Sudan are disproportionately affected by climate change and variability. In particular, the availability of water for agriculture to ensure food security, but also potential renewable energy sources such as hydropower, are of particular interest to both countries. In developing countries such as Ethiopia and South Sudan, climate variability and extreme events are a cause of reduced crop and livestock production, resulting in food insecurity and migration. Therefore, policy makers need sound information on climate change in order to plan adaptation measures to strengthen the resilience of these specific sectors. This special issue is dedicated to providing perspectives on the impacts of climate variability and extremes on agriculture, water and food security, with a particular focus on the capacity of farmers and households to adapt to climate change.
