Hot extrusion approach to enhance the cyclic stability of elastocaloric effect in polycrystalline Ni-Mn-Ga alloys

Abstract

Cyclic stability is vital for the application of the elastocaloric effect. We demonstrated here the enhanced cyclic stability in a Ni50.4Mn27.3Ga22.3 alloy via hot extrusion. The fine equiaxed grains with 〈111〉A texture were obtained after hot extrusion at 1323 K. The extruded alloy showed >250 stable elastocaloric cycles without degradation. The mechanism for the enhanced cyclic stability was the presence of fine grains and low energy dissipation related to the 〈111〉A texture. So, hot extrusion may provide a feasible strategy for improving the eCE stability in polycrystalline ferromagnetic shape memory alloys.
