The PAGES 2k Network: Overview; Progress and Vision

Abstract

The goals of the PAGES 2k Network (PAGES 2k; http://pastglobalchanges.org/science/wg/2k-network/intro) include placing recent global change within the context of the past 2000 years (the 2k interval), and identifying the processes most likely to explain those observations. Previously organized around geographical regions, the 2k Network is currently focused on 8 transregional, process and phenomenon-driven initiatives. We encourage an inclusive, international, community-driven, interdisciplinary and open source approach driven by virtual collaborations and in-person workshops; findable, accessible interoperable and reusable (FAIR; https://www.go-fair.org/fair-principles/) public metadatabases; virtual collaborations, peer reviewed publications; and education/outreach activities. In this contribution, we will discuss the products, promise and challenge in this model for international scientific collaboration over three phases (2006-2021), including: development of temperature, stable isotope and hydroclimate-relevant observational metadatabases, coordination with the Paleoclimatic Model Intercomparison Project (PMIP; https://pmip4.lsce.ipsl.fr/doku.php) community, and key scientific results.
