The effect of grain boundary precipitates on stress corrosion cracking in a bobbin tool friction stir welded Al-Cu-Li alloy

Abstract

Evidence of stress corrosion cracking has been observed in exposed semi-stationary bobbin tool friction stir welded aluminum-copper-lithium alloy 2060-T8. Microstructural analysis confirmed the heterogeneous microstructure transformation caused by the thermomechanical impact of the welding process. Grain boundary phase accumulation initiated anodic dissolution in NaCl solution under stress. In the center and the heat affected zone of the weld, the microstructure was found to form overaged and high copper containing equilibrium phases promoting intergranular stress corrosion.
