Determining baroclinic storminess in the European/Atlantic Sector in the 20th century

Abstract

The present review describes first the inhomogeneity problem whichhinders a straight forward analysis of changes in windiness related to baroclinicwind storms not only in Europe and the Atlantic sector; an option to overcome isto apply proxies, in particular proxies based on air pressure readings; results fromapplying such proxies are discussed – which result in the finding that in the areasconsidered so far, a clear tendency towards more, or less, baroclinic wind stormsdoes not exist – but variations from decade to decade. The validity of the findingsbased on proxy data is confirmed by shorter time series derived from re-analysisand their downscalings with limited area models.
