Corrosion of Friction Stir Welded Magnesium Alloy AM50

Abstract

The microstructure was examined by means of optical microscope. The chemical composition, particularly iron content, and morphology of the oxide film on the surface were analyzed and discerned via auger electron spectroscopy and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. Corrosion behavior of the welding joints and base materials was investigated by virtue of the neutral salt spray tests and potentiodynamic polarization measurement in a mini-cell. The results showed that the corrosion resistance of the welded zone was slightly higher than the base material. The weld is not contaminated with iron. The corrosion morphology is predominantly influenced by the distribution of Mg17Al12 phase.
