Both established processes as e.g. in the scope of ammonia production and in refineries as well as options arising from emerging new technologies are treated. The fundamentals of gas separation by membrane technology are briefly described as well as polymers used as membrane materials and the processes to manufacture technical membranes. This treats the few established polymers used in industrial application as well as emerging new polymer developments possessing a great potential for hydrogen technology with a special focus on thin film composite membranes. The membrane modules employed for the different membrane geometries are introduced and evaluated regarding their advantages and disadvantages. Finally, the operating performance of gas permeation processes is described.
