The present contribution demonstrates various options for the inclusion of fracture mechanics in the design process. A number of fracture mechanics based concepts are available; these include classical damage tolerance, proof testing, and periodic removal of cracks through grinding. Until now, less attention has been paid to application in the design stage, where, however, consistent inclusion of fracture mechanics in design promises substantial potential in designing against failure.
